ISO 9001:2015 is the International Standard that specifies the requirements for Quality Management Systems. Establishing an ISO 9001 system is the best way to demonstrate your organisation’s ability to consistently provide products or services that meet your customer’s requirements.
What does ISO 9001 Certification mean?
You achieve certification to ISO 9001 when a Certification Body has completed an independent, third-party assessment (ISO 9001 Audit) and determined that you have appropriately addressed each of the clauses in the standard. Note that we strongly recommend you choose a JAS-ANZ accredited Certification Body to make sure your certificate is legitimate – if they aren’t with JAS-ANZ then the chances are they are a certificate mill and your clients are likely to reject it.
Why bother with ISO 9001?
Certification to ISO 9001 is often a mandatory requirement for customers. Not having certification means that you could be missing out on new business opportunities especially the larger tenders and contracts. It provides your customers (and their procurement teams) with confidence that you have a system in place to deliver quality products and/or services to meet relevant requirements
It also provides an operational framework to manage and standardise business processes – particularly important during company growth.
What about an Integrated Management System (IMS)?
An Integrated Management System (IMS) is the general term for a documented management system that addresses more than one standard, including any of the following:
- ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems
- ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety
- ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
- ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems
- ISO 55001 Asset Management Systems
- ISO 17025 Testing & Calibration for Laboratories
- ISO 27001 Information Security
- ISO 22000 HACCP Food Safety
- NDIS Practice Standard
- Headspace Consulting
- CSIRO PCCP Certification
Standards often have significant cross-over – similar clauses and requirements. Hence from a management system design perspective, and a system user perspective it is more efficient, consistent and a better approach to address each of the requirements in one integrated management system rather than separate silo systems for each standard.
How do you do what you do?
One of the fundamental requirements of ISO 9001 is to establish the processes or the key steps that need to be taken to make sure the job gets done correctly.
This approach of documenting the processes provides the organisation with a recipe, or operational framework – describing what is done, who does it, the key quality outcomes expected, inter-relationship of the processes and risks to the organisation if the process isn’t completed correctly.
ISO 9001 Continual Improvement – the key to not making the same mistake twice
One of the founding principles of ISO 9001 Quality Management System is continual improvement. This ensures mistakes (complaints, non-conformities, etc) aren’t just corrected, but the action is taken to prevent recurrence of the situation. This system of continual improvement provides a framework to ensure:
- The situation is corrected and the consequences dealt with
- The root cause/s of the situation is/are identified
- An assessment of the root cause/s is undertaken for previous or potential future recurrence
- Action is taken to prevent recurrence (where applicable).
